Founded in 1977, Revigrés is a world reference for ceramics, in the production of porcelain and glazed wall and floor tiles.
Design, Innovation, Quality and Service are the lines which guide Revigrés in all projects. This commitment has been recognized by the awarding of various national and international prizes. Revigrés has four-fold certification of its integrated management systems in accordance with four standards: Quality Management Certification System; Environment Management Certification; Social Accountability Management System; Research, Development and Innovation Management System.
We are the only Portuguese ceramics company to hold certification by the Research, Development and Innovation Management System, in compliance with standard NP 4457:2007 (Portuguese standard).
In this context – in which ongoing investment in new products and production processes are made, either by Revigrés alone, or in partnership with other entities of the scientific and technological system or other companies – Revigrés projects are applying for funds from the Portugal’s Strategic Reference Framework (QREN and PORTUGAL 2020. The goal is to increase sales in foreign markets.
Focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency.
Project of solar energy integrated in wall tiles.
Against the current backdrop of the energy crisis, we are encouraged to find new solutions. It is in this economic climate that an innovative global project has emerged, which is being developed by a consortium of 9 entities, with Revigrés as the leading promoter.
The project consists of the development of integrated photovoltaic ceramic product prototypes for the exterior tiling and roofing of buildings, having the same purpose as traditional solar panels: to use solar energy to produce electricity.
The result is a multifunctional product for a range of uses:
Wall tile
Energy production
Greater architectural integration
Solar energy integrated in tiling is another way of making the most out of renewable energies, fostering sustainable urban regeneration and is conducive to efficient construction.
Amounting to € 229,291.57 in total investment, the project SenseTiles is aimed fundamentally at developing ceramic tiles with non-visible sensors, which allow the switches of a variety of electrical devices to be operated without contact.
Switching on lights, opening/closing taps, making emergency calls are standard actions redesigned for the future.
It has QREN funding, under the Operational Programme Factors of Competitiveness, of € 144,212.32, granted under the European Regional Development Fund.
The project had a duration of 18 months, starting in January 2013 and finishing in June 2014, and involved the leading promoter Revigrés – Indústria de Revestimentos de Grés, Lda. and co-promoters, CTCV – Centro Tecnológico da Cerâmica e do Vidro and INTELLIHOUSE, Lda.
The Revipol project will release new products, based on the development of large-size tiles with different finishes and designed for sophisticated customers.
This project's innovation will allow novelty items to be produced in Portugal. The vision will be projected nation-wide and is ultimately targeted at the international market. By investing in new production lines, based on a strategic orientation of sales growth in external markets, Revigrés strengthens its innovation, in line with the increase of international market demand for surface finished (polished, etc.) and rectified products.
While this project has a strong component of process innovation, sales will reflect product novelty. The strategy that Revigrés has been developing aimed at gaining visibility in the international markets has now allowed it to focus on more sophisticated global customers, by delivering large-size tiles in a whole variety of finishes. Regarding the production process, an important investment will be made towards energy efficiency, less machine set-up time, and better use of materials, which will also allow for higher flexibility when producing bigger tiles with differentiating finishes.
The Revipol project was funded by the ERDF under the Thematic Operational Programme Factors of Competitiveness of the QREN (National Strategic Reference Framework), in accordance with the call for proposals Notice no.12/SI/2012, under the Regulation of the System of Incentives for Innovation, attached to Decree no. 1464/2007, of November 15, as amended by Decrees 353-C/2009 of April 3, 1103/2010 of October 25 and 274/2012 of September 6.

The REVIPOLISHED project targets the development of integrated solutions for polished porcelain tiles that, on the one hand, combine aesthetics with functionality and, on the other hand, increase and contribute to energy efficiency in the process and in buildings.
To achieve the project’s goals, two R&D lines are considered:
1) R&D in surface treatments to endow the polished porcelain tiles with improved stain resistance properties, based on energetically-efficient technologies (UV technology);
2) R&D in the integration of sensorisation in ceramics, with focus on the development and integration of printed sensors, on the development of control hardware and firmware and on the development of electric connection systems.
Main Goals:
Development of an innovative surface treatment for enhanced durability and stain resistance, based on energy-efficient technological processes (UV-curing technology);
Smart electronics embedding to create innovative smart porcelain tiles, which are connected to the lighting system, for use in smart and energy-efficient buildings;
Smart communication and monitoring of domestic power systems, in the forefront of the area of domotics systems currently marketed;
Transversal sequencing of tiles that makes it easier to apply on site.

The REVI CLEAN FACADE project aims to develop a new product for the ceramic group of exterior facade tiles.
Thanks to the innovative characteristics of this product, it will integrate a system for preventing efflorescence, a pathology characterized by the unesthetic salt deposit on wall tiles.
It is common knowledge that one of the main problems of ceramic products used on facades is the unesthetic deposits of salts that form in the joints of tiles, called efflorescence. Consequently, since the market does not offer a solution for mitigating efflorescence, the product that we intend to develop will have innovative features to minimize this problem.
This project is an investment in materials that will help bring value to ceramic tiles used on facades, thus promoting their cultural and architectural value. The solution developed is intended either at new construction, or renovation. At a time when there is still a great potential for the rehabilitation market in Portugal, the focus is on developing a viable and competitive solution.
Project activities
Preliminary studies that will consist of a survey of the national and international markets, the definition of the functional requirements of the system, the physical-chemical evaluation of system pathologies (based on a survey of existing solutions) and an economic study that will help to establish the thresholds of production costs and of the product itself, ensuring its competitive capacity in the market.
System design and development that includes basic settings of system scaling, numerical simulation of physical and mechanical phenomena, development of bond and grout, development of ceramic material, development of the venting system and solutions for production line adjustment.
Experimental validation campaign encompassing the detailed physical and mechanical characterisation of the various components and system. Lastly, real-scale applications through prototypes and monitoring.

The planned investment will help Revigrés continue to promote innovation in the business world, by producing new goods and services and developing processes that support its progression up the value chain to ensure its position on international markets.
Over the last few years, the release of the new collections of 90x90cm porcelain tiles has consolidated and strengthened the differentiation and innovation strategies always sought out by the company. The production of large sizes is a contemporary architectural trend, and these collections will provide for the enhancement of current markets and the development of new ones internationally.
Through this project, and by enhancing and diversifying the products mentioned above, Revigrés invests in the industrialisation of a product group that it has developed through the hard work of RDT, with the help of its partners and entities of the SCTN (National Scientific and Technological System). It has thus proceeded with its strategic plan - Innovation, Design, Quality and Service- as a form of differentiation and breaking away from the state of the art.
