4 Corações Association

Founded in the context of the economic and social crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Association 4 Corações (which means 4 Hearts in English) was developed by a group of friends (artists, athletes, and others) who, in view of the worsening economic difficulties and social inequalities that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, felt the need to join forces to help provide relief to vulnerable groups in the Portuguese society.

It is sponsored by the French association “Les Restos du Coeur” (which translates as Restaurants from the Heart). It was founded in 1985 and has 65 thousand volunteers.

From Heart to Heart

Each of the 4 hearts corresponds to an area of activity: Food, Education, Health and Housing. The following are some of the projects developed in each area.

1. FOOD
Kitchens from the Heart: It includes 5 kitchens in different locations in the country, which serve 150 hot meals every day. They are planning to open 8 kitchens more in 2022.
The Kitchens from the Heart App: By registering in the App, volunteer cooks can deliver meals to those who need them most (in a 5km radius).

2. EDUCATION
Dyslexia: Project for the translation into the Portuguese language of an existing application (the Béatrice Sauvageot method, founder of the Puissance Dys association, in France) for the education of dyslexic children and adults.
Literacy 4 All: Project to contribute to the development of financial education of poorer households, with the support of local institutions, economists and financial institutions.

3. HEALTH
Mental health: Cooperation of health units providing free medical consultations to address the illnesses and problems caused or worsened by the pandemic.

4. HOUSING

The Food Emergency Network

A Rede de Emergência Alimentar foi criada a partir do Banco Alimentar para minimizar o impacto das regras impostas no contexto da Pandemia Covid-19 e que condicionaram a entrega de alimentos por organismos de apoio social.

Its goal is to deliver food to people with meagre income, who are unable to pay for the food which is usually delivered by the social service providers.

It was set up in partnership with ENTRAJUDA and is supported by institutions of social solidarity, parish councils and other local social service providers.

The Food Emergency Network

How does the Food Emergency Network work?

In practice, needs are registered on a platform on line by the individual, a relative, a friend, or any other person.

The requests are then forwarded to a point of delivery close to their residence (charity or municipality that enters/forwards the request).

At the same time, the platform mobilises volunteers. Duly protected, volunteers pick up meals and deliver them to the points of delivery at a fixed location and time or deliver them directly to the homes of the more vulnerable people in need.
